Topic(s) Elbot the Chatbot, Chatbot History, Chatbot Competitions

Elbot is a chatbot which is a conversational agent designed to simulate intelligent conversation with one or more human users via auditory or textual methods. Elbot was created by Fred Roberts, an employee of Artificial Solutions. Fred used NLI technology and a Teneo interaction engine to create Elbot. Elbot has competed in the Chatterbox Challenge and Loebner Challenge in the past. The Chatterbox Challenge is an annual competition where judges ask the bots a series of questions and the bots with the best answers move onto a final round where a new set of questions is asked. Elbot was a finalist in the Chatterbox Challenge in 2001 through 2010--Elbot also won funniest bot and most knowledgable on a couple occasions as well. The Loebner Competition is an annual competition that is similar to a Turing Test (where a bot and human communicate with the judge and the judge must determine which is bot and which is human). Elbot placed 4th in the Loebner Competition in 2002 and 1st place in 2008. Elbot goes through 3 different steps when analyzing and replying to someone's text: 1) ANALYZE- Analyze user input using powerful linguistic libraries and derive potential meanings. Also eliminates ambiguities; 2)REASON-Advanced linguistic interpretation and business rules used to simulate “intelligent thinking”, Conceptual factors and data retrieved from back-office systems help assist with this process; 3) REACT—Perform an appropriate response (action). Elbot is a very hilarious chatbot and users are immediately attached to him once they begin talking.
