Topic(s) Recommender Systems

If you have an amazon account, as many people do these days, then you have probably encountered their recommendation system. It is a very sophisitcated system which takes in an enormour amount of data and outputs personalized recommendations for the users. I want to explore what makes this system different and superior to general recommendation systems.
