Artificial Emotional Intelligence (Affective Computing) Research and Applications


Emotions are ubiquitous in human society. To facilitate smooth and natural interaction between humans and machines, we expect computers to simulate the human ability to recognize and express feeling and emotion. Affective Computing is an interdisciplinary field of study involving psychology, cognitive science, physiology, and computer science. The development of systems fills the gap between computational technology and human affect.

This presentation will explore major technological areas and their practical applications of Affective Computing including computer approaches to emotion recognition and simulation in both facial expression and synthesized speech. I will also discuss the open questions in emotional artificial intelligence research.
